Tomorrow is the Retail Banking Academy’s London Meet Up so we figured these 6 networking tips might come in handy…
Tip 1: Be on time
It is hard to control traffic and transport, but you can control the time you allocate to make it there. By arriving early you’ll notice that it’s calmer and quieter – and people won’t have settled into groups yet. It’s easier to find other people who don’t have conversation partners yet.
Tip 2: Manage your expectations
Understand what you are there to do and set yourself goals. Do you want to meet new people, diversify your network, learn more about a different sector of your industry? If you do not set yourself goals to achieve, you may waste the opportunity to achieve them.
Tip 3: Don’t forget your business cards
It sounds silly but we are all guilty of it. Business cards are a fundamental part of networking, just like setting yourself goals, take 5 minutes the night before to ensure you have packed them.
Tip 4: Listen
The floor will be opened to all attendees to introduce themselves and a current challenge they are facing in their role. Listen! You may be facing the same challenges or have a solution, if you aren’t listening you’ll miss an opportunity to connect.
Tip 5: Log your new contacts the next day
Do not sell yourself short by setting yourself networking goals, achieving them and then not following up on them. Log your new contacts the next day, if you leave it too long, they may not remember you or why they wanted your contact. You may find writing details such as what you/they may have promised to do for each other on the back of their card helpful.
Tip 6: Quality not quantity
Networking isn’t a competition, the biggest collection of business cards may not bring you any closer to your networking goals. Focus on making just a few memorable and solid connections. People can sense when you’re simply speaking with them to grab their card and go, build real relationships with the intention of maintaining them.
